  • To provide accurate and timely intelligence to the incident management team from aerial observation.

    AIR RECONNAISSANCE UNIT (ARU)

The ARU is used to describe the Perth Region FESA “group” of personnel charged with the responsibility of providing air borne intelligence and the associated training and administrative duties. The ARU reports to the Fire Services Tactical Air Group (TAG).

    AIR OBSERVATION TEAM (AOT)

The AOT is used to describe the active team(usually two personnel) at an incident comprising the airborne Air Observer –or AObs, and the ground based Air Intelligence Officer-or AIO.

The role of an Aerial Observation Team (AOT) is fundamentally to gather and interpret intelligence of a wildfire “environment” from an aircraft and to forward that data to that wildfire’s Incident Management Team (IMT) in a user-friendly format.

The “wildfire environment” includes the current fire behaviour and its impact on that location, the area into which the fire is advancing, the fire fighters and their appliances, people, properties, and assets involved or about to become involved and the overall impact on the affected environment.
